I only go to work, I don’t go anywhere else. I prefer to work.
I’ve worked at Steelhead Diner for almost 4 years. I’m a cook. The place is right by Pike Place Market. So for the last two months, we just had like 40 reservations, then 23 reservations, then 14 or 15 reservations. We usually have 6 workers in the kitchen, and then it started getting cut to 3 or 4 people. Doing everything that 6 people usually do. Cleaning, dishes, floors, all of that. They started to push us to start cleaning more. We used to close at normal hours like 10:15 at night when the last customer would come in. Then the owner started to close at 9 o’clock because nobody was coming in after that. And he didn’t have enough sales so he decided to close before the order from the Governor because business was so slow.
I received a phone call really early in the morning. They said the owner decided to close the restaurant because it had been so slow and we don’t want you guys affected and we don’t know when we’re going to be able to be open. Then we got our last paycheck after that, and the owner decided to not open anymore.
I am worried right now about my landlord. We pay rent on the 18th of the month. If that day falls on a Saturday, we have to pay it a day early, or if it’s a Sunday, 2 days early. So for March 18, when I already had been out of work, I called and told the manager I only have a thousand dollars for rent because I lost my job, and I was supposed to have $1265, but I only had a thousand dollars. And he told me, you can pay the thousand dollars, but I don’t know what the landlord is going to say. And I told him, well, you know the governor just passed this law that people can’t be evicted from their homes, and I’m saying that I prefer to come to you to talk about it that I don’t have enough money, that I can pay a thousand dollars and if you’ll give me the chance to pay the rest later I can pay it later. And he said, I don’t know what the landlord is going to say to you, but you need to pay your full rent.
So I’m short almost three hundred dollars. Actually it’s almost $400, because we received a letter in January that they were increasing the rent. I used to pay $1265, and we received a letter from the landlord that she increased the rent to $1396. We received the letter in January that the change would happen in April, which was the rent we paid on March 18. So now I owe $396 plus the next month’s rent on April 18. So that’s my living situation.
It’s me and my son. He’s in school, well at home now.
I am unemployed now but my immigration status does not allow me to apply for unemployment.
So I have been looking for a new job. I started working at Super Saver Food like 4 days ago. But the pay is not really good. It’s $13.65/hour. And the schedule is all over the place. Already this week, yesterday I worked 11:30am – 8pm, and today it’s 3pm – midnight. And tomorrow I’m off, and Saturday it’s 10:30am – 7pm. So every week the schedule is really different. I don’t know what is the deal, why they move people back and forth all over the schedule. But it means I cannot have another job besides this. If I get another job in the morning, I can’t come in for all my shifts here.
After the rent, the biggest bill I have is the cell phone bill to make sure we don’t lose communication with our family. Together that’s about $2000 a month I need. I’ve talked to a lot of people and filled out a lot of forms and applications and I’m really stressed out.I try to cover my bills as best as I can. I only go to work, I don’t go anywhere else. I prefer to work. I prefer to work to pay my bills instead of ask money from the government. It’s not my ideal to have free money from anybody.
I already talk to people so many times about my situation, and I am tired. And I ask for help from so many places, and I don’t have any answers. It is happening to so many people. I feel really frustrated. With this pandemic – oh individuals get $1200, couples get $2400, everybody gets unemployment, but what about immigrants? Other people exist here. The government knows these people exist. Why don’t they apply this stuff to all of us?
There are many people who don’t have a SSN with more kids, many of our neighbors. They are families, coworkers, relatives. And we help each other the best we can. Out of fear, those of us who do not have a SSN, we don’t ask for help – but we pay taxes, medicaid, each thing that is taken out of every single check we receive from our boss. What is the place that we spend our time? It is this country. We are not ghosts, we are Human beings. We are part of this country and this government and this world. We are NATIVE to Mesoamérica. I in particular am MEXICAN NATIVE.

Empezaron a manejarnos a limpiar más. Antes, cerramos a las 10:15 en la noche cuando el último cliente se sentó. Despues, el dueño empezó a cerrar a las 9 porque nadie venía después. Y no tuvo bastante ventas entonces decidió a cerrar antes de la orden del gobernador porque fue tan desierto.
Yo recibió una llamada muy temprana en la mañana. Me dijeron que el dueño decidió a cerrar el restaurante porque no había gente y no quisieron que estamos afectados pero no saben cuando podrían abrirlo otra vez. Entonces recibimos nuestro último cheque después de eso, y después decidió a cerrar.
Ahora, estoy preocupada sobre mi casera. Pagamos la renta en las 18 del mes. Si ese día calle en un sábado, tenemos que pagarlo un día temprano, ó si es un domingo, dos días temprano. Entonces para el 18 de Marzo, cuando ya he estado sin trabajo, yo llamé y dije al gerente que solo tuve un mil dólares porque perdí mi trabajo, y debería pagar $1265, pero solo tuve mil dólares. Y me dijo que, puedes pagar el mil dolares, pero yo no se lo que va a decir la dueña. Y le dije, pues, el gobernador justo a pasar este ley que la gente no puede ser desalojada desde sus casas, y yo estoy diciendo que puede preferir a venir a ud. y hablar porque no tengo bastante dinero, que puedo pagar el mil dólares y si me vas a dar la oportunidad a pagar el resto, puedo pagarlo luego. Y el dijo, yo no se lo que va a decir la dueña, pero tienes que pagar todo de su renta.
Entonces me falta casi trescientos dólares. Actualmente, es casi cuatrocientos, porque recibimos una carta en enero que van a aumentar la renta. Antes, pagé $1265, y recibimos esta carta desde la dueña que la aumentó a $1396. Recibimos la carta en enero que el cambio se pone en efecto en abril, que fue la renta que pagamos en el 18 de marzo. Ya he hablado con gente tantas veces sobre mi situación, y estoy cansada. Y pido por ayuda desde tantos lugares, y no tengo respuestas. Está pasando a tantas personas. Me siento muy frustrada. Con esta pandemia – o, individuales reciben $1200, parejas $2400, y todos reciben desempleo, pero que sobre inmigrantes? Otra gente existe aquí. El gobierno sabe que esta gente existe. ¿Porque no aplican estas cosas a nosotros todos?
Hay mucha gente que no tiene un SSN y con más niños, muchas de nuestras vecinos. Son familias, compañeros de trabajo, familiares. Y nos ayudamos lo más que podemos. Por miedo los que no tenemos un SSN no pedimos ayuda – pero pagamos taxes, medicaid, los cuales son descuentos en cada cheque que recibimos del nuestro jefe. ¿ Cual es el lugar que ocupamos? Es este país. No somos fantasmas, somos Humanos. Somos parte de este país y este gobierno y este mundo. Somos NATIVOS de Mesoamérica. Yo en particular soy MEXICANA NATIVA.
